CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Gray arrived at Virgil and Cassie’s house a little after seven in the morning. After the dream, he couldn’t fall back asleep. It was frustrating. Every time Gray thought that he was making progress, something happened to remind himself that he wasn’t well. The rabbit’s foot was locked in the trick cabinet with the flash drive, hidden away. He’d tell nobody. It was too bizarre. He had no explanation, and didn’t even know where to start.

Instead, Gray focused on what he knew was real. He knew that Virgil wasn’t killed in a botched robbery. He was not a random victim. He knew that it had something to do with the firm, and he knew that Cassie was playing games. She had information that he needed. She had information that could help him regain at least some of what he’d lost, revert back to the normal, boring life he’d taken for granted, a life without guns, migraines, hallucinations, blackouts, and flashbacks. A life where he could fall asleep on his own and wake up in the morning without pain or feeling like he’d lost his mind.

On the drive out, Gray texted his neighbor, Haley, and told her that he had some errands to run. The oven was hot and ready. They’d bake when he got back around nine.

As he pulled into the driveway, Gray surveyed the house. There were no lights on. Unlike his last visit, there was nobody watching from the window. He got out and began to walk toward the door when a neighbor called out.

“You a realtor?”

Gray turned and looked at the man on the other side of the street. He was at the end of his driveway, still in his pajamas, but wearing a winter coat and boots. It looked like he had only ventured outside to retrieve his morning newspaper. A copy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, safe from the elements in a blue plastic bag, was in his hand.

“No,” Gray said. “I worked with Cassie’s husband. Just wanted to check on her. What’s going on?”

The man shrugged. “Not sure. Couple days ago, a truck came and loaded up a bunch of stuff and they were gone. Thought you might be a realtor, hoping to get an update.”

“Sorry,” Gray said. “Any idea where she is or how to get in touch with her?”

The man shook his head.

“Didn’t say goodbye or anything, not that we were close.” The man glanced over his shoulder toward his warm house. His attempt to gather some neighborhood gossip had failed, and now he was ready to get back inside. “Lived next to them for ten years but can’t say I knew them too well. Sad about her husband, though.”

He turned and began to walk away.

“If you don’t mind…” Gray reached into his back pocket and removed his wallet. “I’d like to get in touch with her.” Gray removed one of his business cards. “Can you tell her that I dropped by?”

The neighbor turned and took the card.

“My cell phone is on there,” Gray said.
